2nd Model Virginia Manufactory Saber, 4th Virginia Regiment
36" deeply curved blade smooth and gray with minor dark staining, deeply stamped on the back "4' V’A REG’T". Grip missing wire and leather, wood excellent with minor 1" crack. Pierced iron guard dark with scattered minor pitting. Iron scabbard showing 20% original black paint, with dark patina and light pitting, heavier at the inner curve. Very nice example of this scarce and desirable Virginia sword. According to Albaugh, on the eve of the Civil War, 1500 of these were on hand in Richmond and Lexington with the blade shortened to 36" from the original 40". This scabbard was shortened to match at the same time. At this time, there were 4 Virginia cavalry regiments, numbered geographically. From the Michael Yeck Collection.
