Ashanti Cult Sword, Late 19th C

The Ashanti are in modern day Ghana, in Africa’s western equatorial region. Rich in
natural resources like gold (which gave the region its name of “Gold Coast”) and cocoa,
they were masters in the art of forging. This sword features a heavy curved 21 ˝"
blade, expanding toward the point; pierced with geometric patterns, punched with deep
circles, and incised with hatched bands. Opposite side more crudely finished and
lacking in decoration; sharpened on the inside curve. Large wood grip with two large
balls on either end, carved with alternating sections of vertical and horizontal lines on
the balls and diamonds on the grip. Overall length 30"
