Beaded Chippewa Leather Gauntlets, ca. 1880
Hand stitched leather with trade cloth lining, featuring beautiful floral design made of early small size trade beads. These scarce gauntlets were made for actual use, rather than ceremony, and show typical wear with minor bead loss, a tear in the left thumb, and wear and tears to cloth lining. This exact pair is illustrated and described in Lar Hothem’s "Indian Trade Relics" on page 185 and various issues of "Who’s Who in Indian Artifacts". An early pair which shows use and represents daily life among the Chippewa.
