Colonial American Halberd, Late 17th C
Made in the English manner, though of cruder blacksmith construction. Head is entirely hand forged of iron. Diamond shaped 14" thrusting blade with crudely formed baluster, forged in one piece with the socket for attaching to the shaft. Convex axe blade with flamboyant back beak. The axe head pierced through the shaft of the thrusting blade and forge welded. Blade is decorated with a design of punched dots and crosses. Mounted on old, probably original, hand hewn round shaft. Early colonial blacksmith made piece with much character and charm. Length of iron parts 25 1/2". Overall length 94".
