Decorated Venetian Partizan, ca. 1520
The partizan originated in Italy and was carried by officers and guards of the nobility. This early example has a 25" long blade with strong medial ridge and symmetrical up-turned side lugs; the base engraved with foliage (heavily worn). Integral conical socket with turned balusters and engraved with foliage and geometric designs. Shortened side straps; mounted on period haft with original textile covering and numerous brass dome-head nails (losses to textile and some nails missing). Two-piece iron mushroom-shaped base shoe (defects). Head with scattered pitting and dark age patina. Haft looks positively ancient. Length of metal 34 ½", overall 88".
