English Combination Hunting Sword/Pistol, Late 18th C
Sword hilt of cast brass, featuring dog head quillon, quillon block with green man on one side and acanthus on the other; integral knuckle bow attached to the domed pommel depicting grazing animals in relief; stag horn grip. Large brass shell guard with lion face in relief. Single-edged 23" straight blade, double-edged for the last 4 3/4", with one broad shallow fuller and a deeper narrow fuller at the back edge, featuring long flat ricasso and engraved crown. Attached adapted boxlock pistol with scroll engraving (brazed repairs), marked "LONDON". Round 3 ½" cannon-shaped barrel of 11 mm bore with Birmingham proofs stamped on the underside; long curved trigger with scroll engraving and scroll finial. Blade pitted, becoming heavier near the point. Overall length 28 5/8".
