Etched Austrian Halberd, ca. 1600
Head featuring a small deeply concave axe blade of typical Austrian form; downward-angled rear beak; broad leaf-shaped thrusting blade with pronounced medial ridge; tapering octagonal ferrule; the entire surface etched with foliage and the central figures of a gentleman and lady in period high fashion costume on the blade (heavily worn and pitted, with two small breaks in the metal surface). A pair of side straps have been brazed to the short stubs integral with the ferrule. Mounted on antique round-section hardwood shaft with an old green textile tassel. Similar examples featured in the Landeszeughaus Graz, Austria. Length of metal 30 3/4", overall 82 ½".
