French Brass Firemanís Helmet, 19th C, Campeaux
In the 19th and early 20th Centuries, the French had some of the most attractive firemanís helmets ever made. Looking very much like their military counterparts, except with a brass finish, they show very good workmanship and must have been quite expensive to make. Brass skull with soldered neck lame and one simulated lame; high comb in classical style screwed to the top and extending down to the neck lames. Rivetted visor with turned edge. Highly ornate embossed crest with a flaming bomb and a pair of crossed axes surmounting a castle and shield depicting a fire. Banner bearing "SRS POMPIERS DE CAMPEAUX", surrounded with foliage and acanthus leaves. Leather chin straps with brass scales; rosettes covering the pivoting attachment points. Original red feather pompom on left side. No liner. Very good original condition, with minor dents and dark mustard patina; a few small areas of dark staining and green patination (see photos).
