German Black and White Morion, ca. 1600
Two-piece construction with high comp and brim with roped edge; angled plume holder at rear just below the comb. Raised embossed design featuring a fleur de lis in a circle surrounded by a wave pattern; the raised portion and comb being left "in the white" and the background blackened. Very good original condition, retaining all its original rivets and lining band. Minor wear and crackling to what could be the original paint. No damage or separation to metal, only minor surface rust on the "white" portions (easily cleaned, but left untouched since some collectors prefer it that way). These usually show delamination or splits in the metal over time due to the great extent the metal was stretched during its production. Very attractive morion in great condition for its age. The fleur de lis symbol was used on helmets of the town guards of several large German cities during the 1600's. Nearly identical examples featured in "Europaische Helme" by Muller and Kunter.
