German Executioner’s Sword, Dated 1651

Straight double-edged 30 3/4" blade engraved with the date "1651" and an inscription in old German script on each side; one side with a wheel on a pole, the other with a gallows. Blade with scattered pitting, still retaining a fairly sharp edge. Late 17th or early18th C brass hilt made with cap to cover the scabbard throat; expanded octagonal quillons with button finials; pear-shaped octagonal pommel with button. Spiral wood grip with leather wrap. Overall length 37 ½". An executioner’s sword with crossguard of the same form is in the Kriminalmuseum in Rothenburg, o.d.T., Germany.
