German Halberd, ca. 1580
Axe blade with deeply concave cutting edge, pierced with a stylized St. Andrews Cross. Down-curved rear beak pierced with three interconnected punched holes. Diamond-section 23" thrusting spike. Integral 12 ½" side straps secured with square-head nails and round-head nails with brass rosettes to a 43" section of later rectangular-section hardwood shaft with molded corners. Metal showing light pitting and age staining. Length of metal 39 ½", overall length 70".
