German Late Gothic Westphalia Chest
Heavy quartered oak construction of wide, thick boards; banded with abundant decorative iron strapwork. The major bands end with daisy finials. Central hasp and mortised lock (no key); additional hasp for padlock on left side. Hundreds of large hand forged iron nails with large heads (some replaced). Original legs showing wear and worm damage, but sound. These old chests stood on stone floors for centuries, being subject to insects, rodents, and sometimes standing water, so many times the legs do not survive and are replaced or spliced. Later lid support. Nice dark patina to wood and iron. Length 67 ½" by 24" deep by 32" high. These rare gothic chests are much sought after, with a larger example recently bringing 80,000 British pounds at auction in London. Price includes crating and delivery by motor freight in the contiguous 48 states.
