Indian Armor-piercing Katar Dagger, 19th C
The katar is unique to India and is made solely for thrusting. With its thickened point it was effective at piercing the chain mail commonly worn during this time. Designs varied slightly from one region to another, with some having wider blades. Some were decorated with engraved designs or silver or gold koftgari work. This example is of one-piece construction featuring slender 9" blade with thick medial ridge and thickened armor-piercing point (worn and over-sharpened). Plain hilt of typical form with parallel side bars and two cross bars with expanded centers. Overall length 15 ½".
