Italian Naval Cutlass, Genoa, Early 17th C
Steel hilt with short straight quillons ending in large ball finials; small oval shell guard engraved with an anchor and crowned cross. Bun-shaped pommel with button, engraved with acanthus leaves. Grip with original twisted iron wire wrap (slight damage) and turks heads top and bottom. Broad slightly curved 24 3/8" blade with one full-length fuller and a second short fuller at the leading edge; stamped with "IHS" and a series of alternating circles and lozenge shapes on each side along the full length at the spine. Sharp clipped point. Overall length 29". Patches of light pitting on blade. Sword with very similar blade illustrated in "Armi Bianche Italiane", Fig. 543.
