Japanese Tanto in Carved Bone Mounts, Probably 19th C
This type dagger was often carved from the leg bone of a Buddhist monk. This example features finely carved bone grip and scabbard decorated ensuite with figures in Oriental costume. It has a slight curvature, matching the natural curve of the bone. Small chip and 1" crack to bone at top of scabbard on one side. Slightly curved 6 1/2" single-edged blade of typical form and construction (not pattern welded), with brass habaki. Overall length 10 1/2" without scabbard, 12" with.
