North Italian Cuphilt Rapier, Mid-17th C
Steel hilt with hemispherical cup guard with roped edge pierced and chiseled with floral and acanthus design, the central section solid in the shape of an 8-petaled flower. Decorative chiseled quillon block with large pas d’ane and small scalloped guardopolvo screwed to the cup. Straight octagonal quillons engraved with scroll design, swelling toward the ends, with a series of four disks at the finials; knuckle bow decorated ensuite. Grip wrapped with twisted copper wire and bun-shaped pommel with chiseled acanthus design and button finial. Slender unmarked hexagonal-section 42 ½" blade with central 10" fuller. Very good condition with some light scattered pitting. Overall length 49 3/4".
