Pair of Etched North Italian Sabatons, ca. 1580
Each made of a single piece of steel formed to fit over the toe. A typical sabaton covers the entire foot, but these cover only the first 2" of the foot, with the rear edge punched with a number of holes for attachment to another lame or possibly chain mail. Profusely etched with panels depicting trophies, acanthus, sea monsters, and a central panel featuring an intertwined Savoyard knot; all with a finely hatched background. A winged cherub face is on the front of each toe. A perfectly matched pair of very high quality in excellent condition. The etching shows almost no wear and they possibly were never fitted to an armor or worn.
