Profusely Etched German Morion, Dated 1581

One-piece construction with roped comb, full rounded skull, and shallow curved brim with roped edges; the entire exterior surface deeply etched with acanthus on a dotted background. On one side is a circular medallion bearing a rampant Brunswick lion; the other bearing a spread-winged eagle and the date "1581" around its head. The brim has etched triangular panels filled with acanthus surrounded by hatched diagonal bands. The comb etched with hunting scenes of hounds chasing a fox on one side and a rabbit on the other. The rear has a plume holder etched ensuite. Etching is of superb quality and very sharp and clear with no significant wear. All rivets are intact and original. The only defect is a break in the brim and base of skull that has been repaired with silver solder. This type of break is extremely common on these one-piece morions, as the metal is stretched so far to form the piece that it inevitably develops stress cracks over time. The best etched morion we have ever offered.
