Silver Inlaid Broadsword with Flamboyant Blade, ca. 1660
Hilt of "Walloon" style, typical of the second half of the 17th C, with asymmetrical side rings, each filled with a pierced plate; knucklebow with curving bar attached to each side ring and to the spherical pommel with button. Pommel, side rings, and plates engraved in geometric and figure-eight pattern and filled with silver (some losses). Grip with twisted wire binding and braided silver turks heads. Straight 31 ½" flamboyant blade with 7" central fuller, stamped "FRANCISCO" one side and "RUIS EN TOLEDO" other side. Attractive and unusual style of sword we have never before encountered. Overall length 37 1/4".
