Silver Inlaid Left Hand Dagger, German or Italian, Early 17th C
Iron hilt with straight quillons expanding toward the finial; angled slightly forward in the obverse plane. Single side ring. Tapered barrel-shaped pommel with small button. The guard inlaid with thick silver in a pattern of circles, crosses and dots (minor silver loss). Wood grip with two sizes of twisted iron wire and turks heads top and bottom. Straight 9 ½" double-edged blade of flattened hollow-ground diamond-section with the medial ridge flattened for 4 3/8" and a flat thick ricasso with twin groves and a pair of stamped marks. Most of the blade with gilt decoration of scrolls and acanthus. Blade with dark patina, areas of corrosion, and a few shallow nicks. About 50% of the gilt decoration remains. Scarce dagger of high quality. Overall length 14".
