Spanish-American War Trench Art Lamp
Magnificently crafted from a complete inert US 6-pounder Hotchkiss artillery shell, the base stamped "UMC CO/BRIDGEPORT, CT USA/DRIGGS ORDNANCE CO./4-96". Driggs Ordnance Company was in business from 1893-1897 and the "4-96" marking would indicate April, 1896 as the manufacture date. The shell casing is embossed with a raised crucifiction scene on one side and a lighthouse on the other, with stippled background. The unfired projectile is drilled and tapped with four holes, each mounted with a decorative curved brass pipe with a lamp socket with pull-chain switch and antique glass shade. The shell is mounted on a large brass base of pyramid shape with embossed decorations of a reclining woman, a horse and rider, a rose, and a submarine and King Neptune respectively on each of the four sides; this base being screwed to a wood base (slightly warped) with a .3006 rifle cartridge at each corner. There is a push-pull switch on the base to control power to the lamp sockets. Fully functional and lovingly restored with a combination of antique and modern electrical parts and wiring. Weight 16 pounds, height 22". Lovely rich patina to the brass. Price includes domestic US shipping.
