US M1816 Harpers Ferry Flintlock Musket
This example classified by Flayderman as a M1816 Type II musket made at the Harpers Ferry National Armoury and dated 1823. Flat beveled lock plate marked "HARPERS/FERRY/1823" vertically behind the hammer; "US" stamped forward of the hammer with the typically found eagle stamp completely absent; hammer stamped "V"; detachable brass flash pan. Mechanism excellent with strong main spring. Tapering round 42" barrel of .69 cal., stamped "V/P/(eagle head)" and "U/a/59" at breech, with "1823" on barrel tang; bayonet lug 1 1/4" from muzzle. Sling swivels on middle barrel band and forward edge of trigger guard; brass front sight brazed on forward barrel band; original ramrod with button tip. Metal parts cleaned bright with varnish covering the barrel. Walnut full stock with only minimal handling marks and small stress cracks in the butt. Overall length 57 1/4". Except for the missing eagle stamp on the lock plate, overall condition very good plus as cleaned.
