Description
Common peasant weapon used for centuries in Europe, especially Germany. This example has been excavated and is heavily corroded, but has been cleaned and repaired with 2 riveted plates; perhaps for possible use. It is curious why someone would go to such effort to make riveted repairs to a badly corroded piece, but now it is fully functional. Many such weapons were kept and used long past their time of obsolescence. For example, it is known that many archaic weapons were kept in arsenals throughout Europe for centuries and some saw use during the Napoleonic Wars and even later. This example has a 12″ head of typical form and is mounted on a later round-section wood shaft. Overall length 80″.
