Description

This style halberd, or “Halbertenaxt” in German, is unique to Southern Germany and Switzerland. Forged iron head with convex axe blade, pierced with punched round holes and a clover cutout and tapering to a broad, flat point. Reverse with straight, thick, square-section spike. Long integrally forged side straps and mounted to an old, possibly original, hardwood shaft (worm eaten and with a repaired break). Metal cleaned and showing scattered light pitting, lamination, and forging flaws. A nearly identical example is pictured in “Europaische Hieb-und Stichwaffen”, by Muller, Kolling, and Platow, on page 186, figure 88. First halberd of this type we have ever offered. Metal Length of metal 30 1/2” (77.5 cm), overall 90” (228.5 cm).
