Description

Hand-forged crescent-shaped axe blade with lugs top and bottom, three punched round holes, and three vertical ribs flanking each side of the attachment straps. Downcurved rear beak with bird-shaped upturned lug. It is constructed in the English method with the axe blade being forged separately from the thrusting spike and the side straps, and instead is made to go through them. Separately forged 21” thrusting spike of diamond-section forged integrally with the shortened side straps, one of which is incised with the initials “DC”. The spike and straps are attached to the axe blade with a single rivet and attached to the later hand-hewn wooden shaft with two rivets. The shaft is firmly attached to the straps, but the axe blade has movement because it is only attached by the single rivet. The metal is heavily corroded, showing lamination with some separation. Shows great age and a dark patina. Length of metal 26 1/2” (67.3 cm), overall 79 3/4” (202.5 cm).
