Description
The US M1860 Cavalry Saber was the standard cavalry sword of Union troops during the Civil War, along with the heavier M1840 AOld Wrist Breaker@. Over 300,000 were made by the end of the war by various makers. This example with curved 34 3/4” blade with one broad and one narrow fuller; the ricasso marked with date “1862” on the obverse. Any other blade markings have been worn away from cleaning. Leather blade washer. Standard cast brass two-branch guard and knuckle-guard attached to the Phrygian helmet pommel; repaired break where the branches join the knuckle guard. Reverse of knuckle bow stamped with unit markings “78 M12C”. Original leather-wrapped wood grip with twisted brass wire wrap. Original iron scabbard with two carry rings, with scattered rust primarily below the carry rings and several shallow dents near the drag. Blade smooth and cleaned bright; brass with pleasing patina. Overall length 40 3/4”, not including scabbard.
