Description
Clearly showing the French influence in style this beautiful sword features cast brass hilt
consisting of down-turned clamshell guard depicting an eagle clutching arrows in its talons
with US shield on its breast and surrounded by laurel leaves. Integral knuckle bow with
scroll design connecting to the throat of the eagle head pommel. Two-piece checkered
bone slab grips with base ferrule decorated with acanthus. Straight 31 3/4″ single-edged
blade with single 2/3 length fuller; etched, blued, and gilt with engraved gold-filled
decoration over the upper third depicting foliage and stands of arms; the lower 15″ double-
edged. In its original brass scabbard with two carrying rings and frog button (some
scratches dents from age and use). Sword is untouched since its period of use and shows
dark patina to all parts; blade bluing very dark and engravings worn. Overall length 36
1/4″, not including scabbard. Possibly a French import, but clearly made for an
American officer.
