Description

Patterned after the French Model AN IX Infantry Briquet introduced in 1802, the sword became so popular that it was adopted by most European nations throughout the 19th C and even adopted for naval use. It could be manufactured quickly and cheaply with its one-piece cast brass hilt and short unfullered blade. This example with 23 1/4” curved single-edged blade, cleaned and heavily pitted, with no markings legible. Solid brass hilt, cleaned in the European fashion, with a stamped mark on the knuckle-guard and what appears to be a mark at the quillon block which is worn and no longer legible. Overall length 28 3/4”.
