Description

Hilt of Norman Type 59, formed of round-section iron bars, comprising straight quillons expanding toward the ends; large pas d’ane connected to an obverse side ring, with a larger side ring with central curled bar filling the space and angled toward the pommel, which connects to a knuckle guard. Reverse with three looping bars extending from the bottom of the pas d’ane to join into one and connect with the knuckle guard. Ovoid pommel with button, grip wrapped with two sizes of twisted iron wire and finished with Turks heads top and bottom. Slender 46 1/2” diamond-section blade, the long flat ricasso stamped with a crowned “H” in a shield. According to Hawtrey-Gyngell’s “Armourer’s Marks”, page 81, this is the mark of Toledo maker Aguirre Domingo, Son of Hortuno. Very good condition with even dark gray patina. Overall length 52 1/2”
