Description

Elegant hilt style with cup guard formed of six flower-petal shaped lobes formed from slightly hollowed out flat bars, each filled with a plate pierced and chiseled with a pattern of interlocking fleur de lis. Vertically recurved quillons of round bars with intricately chiseled leaf-shaped finials. Looping bars extend from both sides of the cup to join the knuckle bow, which ends with a recurved leaf-shaped finial. Four-sided leaf-shaped pommel with button, chiseled ensuite. Grip wrapped with two sizes of twisted iron wire and finished with Turks heads top and bottom. Slender 44 1/4” blade of flattened diamond section, the flat ricasso stamped with a shield-shaped maker’s mark on both sides. Excellent condition for its age, with even gunmetal gray patina. Overall length 50”. This exact rapier is pictured on the cover of Eric Valentine’s “Rapiers”, and again, with description, on page 36, example #24. Outstanding and elegant example, which would be a centerpiece to any private or museum collection.
