Description
Classic swept hilt design formed of faceted bars, featuring straight quillons expanding toward the finials, three concentric side rings joining the large pas d’ane at the bottom and the knuckle bow at the top. Reverse with three sweeping bars extending up from the bottom of the pas d’ane and joining the knuckle bow at the top. Faceted ovoid pommel with button; grip wrapped with alternating plain and twisted iron wire and finished with Turks heads top and bottom. Slender 41 1/2” blade of diamond-section with long ricasso engraved with the Lion of St. Mark on one side. Metal with dark gray gunmetal patina; the blade with light pitting. Overall length 47”. Possibly Venetian, as the Lion of St. Mark is a symbol of that city and former republic.
