Long-handled Iroquois Spiked Tomahawk with Original Haft, Mid-18th C

Description

These long handled curved spike axes were favored among the Iroquois Federation tribes
such as the Mohawks and used during the Revolutionary War and French and Indian
War. The head is hand forged with a brass cap and features a square-section curved
spike and crescent-shaped axe blade. Mounted on its original haft, with original red ocher
war paint and black haft end; period square nail covering the eye. Paint has some cracks,
and chips consistent with age and use. Beautiful age patina to wood and metal. Very
rare to have a revolutionary period spiked war axe in this condition.

Provenance: Originally from the Jim Dressler Collection and featured in “Ornamental
Indian Artifacts” by Lar Hothem, page 389. Also pictured in “Who’s Who In Indian
Relics”, Vol. 10, page 291. The Iroquois were considered the fiercest of Eastern native
tribes. Head 6 1/2″ long with 5 ½” blade. Overall length 33″. A very rare spiked
tomahawk on it original ash haft in museum grade condition.
