Description
Large imposing fighting halberd featuring broad 28″ curved sabre blade with long single
fuller at the back edge, swelling to a double-edged point. Integrally forged convex axe
head coming to a point at the top, with large tapering rectangular ferrule with beveled
edges; mounted on its original octagonal oak haft with four securing straps and old brass
collection/inventory tag marked “A1631″. These halberds were carried by Imperial
troops during the Thirty Years War. Length of metal 64″, overall 106 ½”. Provenance:
De-accessed Bavarian Army Museum, 1934; sold Gallerie Fischer, Zurich, May 1935,
Lot 30. Very unique and impressive fighting halberd. A number of these halberds,
formerly in the Bavarian Zeughaus (arsenal), are preserved in the Bavarian Army
Museum, Ingolstadt. An identical halberd, inventory number A1616, is on display there
and pictured and described as late 16th C on their website:
