Spanish Military Broadsword, Bilbo, First Half 18th C

Description

Iron hilt formed of round-section bars featuring straight quillons with turned button finials,
knuckle bow with turned central section and button finial, large pas d’ane riveted to the
upturned asymmetrical double shell guards bearing incised decoration and line borders.
Bun-shaped pommel and grip with twisted copper wire wrap (small repairs) and ferrules top
and bottom. Double-edged 28″ blade with central fuller bearing indistinct inscription. Metal
with age patina and light pitting. Overall length 34 1/4″. The bilbo was a popular weapon
in the Spanish colonies of the New World and thought to be a favorite of pirates.
