Description

The US M1860 Cavalry Saber was the standard cavalry sword of Union troops during the Civil War, along with the heavier M1840 AOld Wrist Breaker@. Over 300,000 were made by the end of the war by various makers. This example with curved 35” blade with one broad and one narrow fuller; the ricasso marked only with “M” on the obverse (likely the rest worn off) and “J.B.A.” on the reverse (probably inspector initials). Standard cast brass two-branch guard and knuckle-guard attached to the Phrygian helmet pommel. Knuckle-guard stamped with spurious “CSA”. Wood grip with remains of leather wrap and single turn of twisted brass wire at the top. Iron scabbard with two carry rings. Brass hilt with dark patina; blade with scattered light to moderate pitting and age staining; the scabbard with several dents.
